Cost before commitment

FAFSA is an application. An estimate is not an offer. A loan is not a discount.

Use this decoder to identify the amount you may truly pay, the debt you may carry, and the questions a school must answer in writing.

The federal sequence

Five steps that should not be collapsed into one promise.

  1. Plan: estimate the entire cost of attendance and living, not tuition alone.
  2. FAFSA: submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid for the correct award year.
  3. Submission Summary: review your information, Student Aid Index, estimated eligibility, corrections, and verification status.
  4. School aid offer: after admission, each school decides and sends the aid it is actually offering.
  5. Accept and repay: accept only what you understand; loans must be repaid with interest under their terms.

Read every line

Money that lowers price is different from money that delays payment.

Grants & scholarshipsUsually reduce what you pay, subject to their terms.
Work-studyEligibility to seek and earn wages; not guaranteed cash up front.
LoansBorrowed money that must be repaid, generally with interest.

The FAFSA Submission Summary contains estimates; it is not a school’s financial aid offer. Compare offers line by line and identify whether each amount is a grant, scholarship, wage opportunity, federal loan, private loan, parent debt, payment plan, or institutional credit.

Your true-cost worksheet

Calculate beyond advertised tuition.

Add: tuition, mandatory fees, books, equipment, uniforms, background checks, immunizations, examinations, credential applications, travel, parking, clinical-placement travel, technology, repeated courses, and reduced work hours.

Subtract only verified non-repayable aid: grants and scholarships you are actually offered and able to keep under the written terms.

Then identify the gap: cash, payment plans, wages, federal loans, private loans, parent loans, or another source. Record who owes each debt, the interest rate, origination fee, when interest begins, when repayment begins, and the consequence of leaving before completion.

Before accepting

Ask for written answers tied to your exact offering.

  • What is the total charge for the entire program, not only the first payment period?
  • Which expenses are excluded from the advertised price?
  • Which aid is a grant, scholarship, work-study opportunity, federal loan, private loan, or parent obligation?
  • What changes if my enrollment, attendance, clinical placement, satisfactory progress, or completion date changes?
  • How are refunds, withdrawals, returns of aid, balances, and collections handled?
  • Which outcome, placement, transfer, and credential-eligibility claims are supported by current written evidence?
